Before it was discontinued in 2012, Cobalt Teal was one of the most popular colors amongst artist. It was truly a sad day to be told that Golden Artist Colors was discontinuing it due to discontinuation of the pigment supply.
I recalled photographing the few tubes of Cobalt Teal in Golden Artist Colors warehouse in upper state New York for posterity! Insane I know ... but if you're from my generation, you'd recall that white goods and all appliances, car included where painted in Cobalt Teal ... it's a colour I grew up with.
First discovered by Thenard in France in 1802, cobalt teal was introduced as an artist's colour in the 1820s. It has a greenish-blue hue and is an extremely opaque pigment with a very light mass tone (one of the lightest for blue pigments without the addition of white).
So, now that it's back, with a little difference from the pre-2012 version, I am over the moon, as I am sure GOLDEN Certified Working Artist Program Director Patti Brady (responsible for making Golden's Cobalt Team famous) is! ... in addition to artist the world over.
